Emergence: Neuroscience, Creativity + Miracles w— Jordan Hamm, PhD

"It helps to marvel at that miracle in every living thing. Life itself is an emergent property of the earth."

Jordan Hamm is an assistant professor at Georgia State University in the neuroscience department. He runs a research lab studying brain circuitry, specifically in the context of neuro-psychiatric disorders. In this episode, he talks with us about the phenomena of emergence that is every where within our living world. I must admit, in this episode we nerd out pretty hard. We also talk about what emergence means in our nervous system, brain functioning, consciousness, + creativity.

we discuss

  • What is emergence and how he came upon it within his field

  • How the brain is an emergent machine

  • How meditation creates emergent patterns in the brain

  • Consciousness as an emergent property of matter

  • The working theory around all matter experiencing consciousness on some level

  • How we can appreciate the simpler emergence around us

  • Being alive is a phenomena

  • How emergent order is inherently cooperative

  • How chaos participates in order

  • How emergence relates to creative process, relationship + transcendence

  • Dynamics between life, order and entropy
