The North + South Node Enter Taurus + Scorpio in January 2022

Whenever someone brings up the nodes in an astrology call or webinar, the chat goes wild. This is partly due to the rise of Evolutionary Astrology and its emphasis on the position of the natal lunar nodes. While I appreciate and utilize many characteristics of modern astrology — primarily centering the healing of the individual and their capacity for transformation— I approach the nodes differently than most evolutionary astrology practitioners. I think the whole chart yields a complex, nuanced, accurate picture of the life and that we need all of the natal placements (not just the nodes + Pluto) to help us get to the rich depth of meaning + direction.

In this article, I’ll share how I look at the nodes for clients and what we can expect from their upcoming transits through Taurus + Scorpio beginning January 18, 2022.

What are the Nodes in Astrology?

So what are the Nodes? The lunar nodes are not actual planetary bodies like Mars, Venus or Mercury. The Nodes are moving points along the ecliptic. When the Sun + Moon intersect with these points, we have an eclipse.

Unfortunately, there is no consensus on the what the nodes mean when we look back through thousands of years of astrological data + historical scholarship. In the past few decades, one popularized narrative is that the North Node equals this life or the future destiny and the South Node represents the past life.

In the Vedic tradition, the North Node is associated with Rahu and the South Node is associated with Ketu.

the North Node (☊) — Rahu, the head of the dragon or serpent, associated with increase, amplification, hunger, excess + drive

the South Node (☋) — Ketu, the tail of the dragon or serpent, associated with decrease, lessening, dispersion, letting go + detachment

I, personally, think it oversimplifies the chart (+ someone’s life) to look only at the Nodes as the definitive lens for past life and future destiny. Instead, we can look farther back into the astrological tradition and integrate the Nodes as additional information, or adjectives, that describe :

  • where in the life the tendencies for increase + decrease are happening

  • where there is movement to simplify + amplify

  • where we can expect beginnings + endings due to the instability (or change) created by eclipses

It’s important to note that I do not consider the nodes moral imperatives. The nodes do not tell us what we should do, what we should lean towards or what we should let go. They simply let us know where this flow is happening. In and of themselves, they don’t tell us whether this flow is “good” or “bad.” This kind of diagnostic information requires a more specific, personalized look at the overall chart.

Where are the Nodes?

On January 18, 2022, the nodes will enter the signs of Taurus + Scorpio. This means that for the next 18(-ish) months, when we have eclipses, they will take place in these signs. Therefore, we can expect these houses in our chart to undergo some new cycles of change + digestion. The last time the nodes were in these respective signs was April 2003 - December 2004.

The North Node in Taurus

The North Node is moving into Taurus, bringing with it that amplification, hunger or “volume up.” So if you have personal placements in the sign of Taurus we can expect those placements to be activated by this transit. The topics in the Taurus part of chart may take up more space, have more ambition around them or be more inclined towards excess.

The South Node in Scorpio

The South Node is moving into Scorpio, and it brings that house in your chart into a more spiritualized view. There may be a decrease in energy, a letting go of some kind or a re-distribution of priorities. This is particularly true if you have personal planets or angles in the sign of Scorpio.

Eclipses in Taurus + Scorpio : Key Dates

When the nodes shift into Taurus + Scorpio, we will have eclipses in these signs over the next 18 months. Eclipses tend to create rapid changes, sudden shifts, to the places where they are happening. While eclipse outcomes are infamously hard to predict, we can expect new cycles of beginnings and endings in these areas of life.

This is especially true for these eclipses because Taurus + Scorpio are fixed signs, and there is already ongoing tension happening amongst these signs. Due to the Saturn + Uranus square, there is likely already some instability and shifts happening here. The eclipses will bring additional waves of change as they move through these signs.

Here are the dates for the upcoming eclipses taking place in Taurus + Scorpio over the next year and a half :

Solar Eclipse in Taurus on April 30, 2022

Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio on May 16, 2022

Solar Eclipse in Scorpio on October 25, 2022

Lunar Eclipse in Taurus on November 8, 2022

Solar Eclipse in Taurus on April 20, 2023

Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio on May 5, 2023

Reflections for the Nodes in Taurus + Scorpio

Look at your natal chart. If you don’t have a copy, click here, and I’ll show you how to pull up your chart for free on astro.com Once you have your chart, look at which houses Taurus + Scorpio are for you. What topics of your life are inside of these houses? You can access this Houses Cheat Sheet for a quick + easy reference.

  1. Do you have any planets in these houses? In particular, the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn or Jupiter? If you do, the nodes will conjoin them at some point during their journey through Taurus + Scorpio.

  2. Journal. Do you feel excited or invigorated when you think of change in these areas of life? Do you feel resistance? When you look at your life from the outside, are there any ways these topics are ready to be reorganized or reprioritized? When you look at your life from inside of your body, what wants more + what wants less?

  3. In regards to the South Node in Scorpio : Some people get afraid whenever we talk about letting go or releasing things. Think of it as an opportunity to sort and prioritize what is important. While amplifying the Scorpio area of life may not be very supported right now, you can focus instead on how you can conserve your energy and surrender. You don’t have to fix things that aren’t broken. You don’t have to save things from releasing. When we let things go, we create more space for what remains to be renewed + revitalized. How can we honor what is ready to be released or dispersed?

  4. In regards to the North Node in Taurus : How might you use discernment with the hunger around the topics of your Taurus house? Do you have the energy for “more” in this area of your life? Where do you need to create (or appreciate) the boundaries that let you know when there is “too much”?

An orange half moon and a lavendar half moon eclipse one another. An eye sees through them.
